Contact lenses

Contact lenses for astigmatism.

If you have astigmatism, you don't have to skip contacts. Toric contacts are specifically designed to stay oriented correctly on your eye and correct astigmatism along with distance vision. Fitting takes more care, but most adults with astigmatism wear them successfully.

Toric fitting matters more β€”
than fitting standard contacts.

Soft toric

First-choice for most astigmatism

Modern soft toric lenses, which your eye doctor will fit (multiple FDA-approved brands available Toric) handle most prescriptions well. Daily disposables, two-week, and monthly options. Mild rotation on blinking is normal; the lens self-corrects within seconds.

High astigmatism

Custom soft or rigid GP

For astigmatism over about -2.50, custom soft toric or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses give crisper vision. RGPs are less comfortable initially but provide the sharpest possible vision for high astigmatism.

Hybrid options

Specialty contacts (SynergEyes, scleral)

Hybrid lenses (rigid center, soft skirt) and scleral lenses (large rigid lenses that vault the cornea) work for very irregular astigmatism β€” particularly keratoconus or post-surgical eyes.

Patience

Expect 2-3 fitting visits

Toric fitting often requires more visits than standard contacts to find the right brand, fit, and stability. Don't be discouraged if the first lens doesn't work β€” small fit adjustments make a big difference in toric performance.

Come back for an adjustment if

Your vision fluctuates with blinks, you see two or three of headlights at night, or vision is hazy at the end of the day. These signal the toric lens isn't stable on your eye β€” usually a fit problem your eye doctor can solve with a different brand or design.

Honest answers to common questions.

Can I wear regular contacts if I have mild astigmatism?+

Sometimes β€” astigmatism under about -0.75 is sometimes 'masked' by spherical contacts, giving acceptable but not perfect vision. For most people, even mild astigmatism benefits from a toric lens. Your eye doctor will let you compare.

Are toric contacts more expensive?+

Yes, typically 30-50% more than standard contacts. Daily disposable torics run $700-1100/year. The optical complexity (correcting two different powers) drives the cost.

Do toric lenses always rotate to the right position?+

Most do, within a few seconds of insertion. Design features (lower lid pressure, ballasting) orient them. If a particular lens rotates inconsistently for you, your doctor can try a different brand with a different stabilization method.

Can I get toric daily disposables?+

Yes β€” your eye doctor can fit you with daily toric lenses (Biotrue ONEday for Astigmatism, Dailies AquaComfort Plus Toric, and others. Daily disposable torics are increasingly available and avoid the cleaning/storage routine.

My vision in toric contacts isn't as sharp as in glasses. Why?+

Possible reasons: imperfect axis alignment, intermediate fit, lens rotation, or your prescription needs a small adjustment for contact lens form vs. glasses form. A refit usually closes the gap.
