Understanding progressives

One lens, every distance.

Progressive lenses provide a smooth gradient from distance vision at the top through intermediate to reading at the bottom β€” without the visible line of bifocals. The modern choice for adults needing more than one prescription.

Choosing progressives β€”
and adapting to them.

Good fit for

Most adults needing more than one Rx

If you're going from single-vision into multi-distance needs, progressives are usually the first option. Especially good if you don't want a visible bifocal line.

Adaptation

1-3 weeks of adjustment

Most people adapt fully within a few weeks. The first few days you'll notice the side distortion when turning your head; the brain learns to ignore it. About 1 in 5 wearers don't adapt well and prefer lined bifocals.

Better lenses

Premium digital designs

Newer free-form or 'office' progressive designs have wider clear corridors and less peripheral distortion than older designs. Worth the premium for screen-heavy work.

Fitting matters

Pupillary height measurement

Progressives demand precise centering. A 2mm error vertically shifts which prescription is in front of your pupil. Get them fit in person and verify lens centering before walking out.

Come back if

After two weeks you're still uncomfortable, getting headaches, or struggling to read β€” the lenses may need re-centering, the prescription may need adjustment, or you may be a candidate for a different lens design. Don't suffer in silence.

Honest answers to common questions.

Will I trip on stairs?+

Look down by tilting your chin rather than your eyes β€” the reading zone at the bottom of the lens can make stairs look closer than they are. Most people adapt within a few weeks.

Why is the peripheral vision blurry?+

Modern lens design pushes most distortion to the lower outer corners, where you rarely look directly. Better-quality progressives have wider clear zones; older or cheaper designs have more peripheral blur.

Can I use progressives for computer work?+

Yes, but screen-heavy work is often more comfortable with a dedicated computer/office lens that has a larger intermediate zone. Many adults use both: progressives for daily life, computer lenses at the desk.

Are progressives worth the cost?+

Often yes. They eliminate the need to swap glasses between tasks and avoid the visible bifocal line. About 1 in 5 people don't adapt well β€” for them, lined bifocals or two separate pairs work better. Most opticals offer adjustment periods.

How long do progressives last?+

Physically, as long as the frame and lenses hold up β€” several years. Prescription-wise, expect updates every 1-3 years as presbyopia evolves through your 40s and 50s.
