Understanding cataract recovery

The first few weeks after surgery.

Cataract surgery recovery is usually smooth and fast β€” but there are a few important rules that protect your healing eye. Here's exactly what to expect day by day.

Your eye is healing, not hurt.

The incision we made is tiny β€” smaller than 3mm β€” and self-sealing. No stitches. Your eye's natural healing closes it within hours, but full stabilization takes about a month.

During that time, we protect the eye from pressure, germs, and trauma. Nothing dramatic β€” just a few simple restrictions that prevent the rare but real complications.

Here's the plan β€”
and why it works.

Days 1-7

Drops + shield

Three different drops on specific schedules. Shield at night. Keep the medication schedule written down β€” it matters.

Week 1

Take it easy

No bending below the waist, no heavy lifting, no rubbing the eye. Walking fine. Light desk work fine.

Week 2-4

Most restrictions lift

Back to exercise, light yard work. Swimming and hot tubs wait until 4 weeks. Makeup typically okay at 2 weeks.

Month 1+

Full clearance

Final follow-up confirms stable healing. New glasses prescription (if needed) usually finalized here.

Increasing pain (not just scratchiness), sudden decrease in vision, new flashing lights or floaters, or significant redness. These are uncommon but time-sensitive when they happen.

Honest answers to common questions.

When will I see clearly?+

Most patients notice dramatic improvement by the next morning. Fine-tuning continues over 1–2 weeks. If your other eye still has a cataract, your brain may take a week or two to adjust to unequal vision between eyes.

Can I bend over or lift things?+

No heavy lifting (>20 lbs) and no bending below the waist for the first week. This prevents pressure spikes in the eye. After your 1-week visit, most restrictions lift.

When can I shower or wash my hair?+

Shower right away β€” just keep soap and water out of the eye for a week. Tilt your head back in the shower. No swimming or hot tubs for 2 weeks.

Why do I need to wear the shield at night?+

About 1 week, just at night. It prevents you from accidentally rubbing or bumping the eye while sleeping. A poke during deep sleep can dislodge healing.

My eye feels scratchy β€” is that normal?+

Very normal for the first week. The surface was irritated, not damaged. Preservative-free artificial tears between your prescribed drops help. Worsening pain or discharge β€” that's different, call us.

When can I drive?+

Typically 1–2 days after each eye, once the post-op check confirms you meet vision requirements. Nighttime driving may feel odd for the first week β€” halos around lights are common and fade.
